The easiest way to tell if you tires’ treads are worn down is the Penny Test. Take a penny and insert it between your tire’s treads with Abraham Lincoln’s head upside down (the top of his head should be toward the tire). If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.
The Penny Test works because National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines say that tires should be replaced when the tread reaches 2/32 of an inch, and a penny is an easy and memorable way to check. Keep in mind, of course, that tread wear is only one element of overall tire condition.
Uneven tread wear can also be a tell-tale sign that it’s time to get new tires. If that’s the case, you should also ask your Friendly Acura Service Advisor about fixing your car’s alignment and suspension, as these are common causes. Also, if there is visible damage to your tires — like punctures, bulges, and cracking — your tires will likely need to be replace.
