Review: 2018 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid

Hybrid Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The MDX Sport Hybrid has a 3.0-liter V6 engine combined with three electric motors, with the engine and a Direct Drive motor powering the front wheels and a Twin Motor Unit operating the rear wheels, all controlled and optimized with a Power Distribution Unit under the center console. Transmission is a motor-integrated 7-speed dual clutch automatic with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters. Additionally, all Sport Hybrid models feature Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, giving you full control and the power to navigate through any terrain or weather condition.

The MDX Sport Hybrid’s powertrain makes a net 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. According to U.S. Department of Energy estimates, the model gets 26 MPG city, 27 MPG highway, and 27 MPG combined.*

Comfort and Convenience

The MDX Sport Hybrid comes with either the Technology Package (seats seven) or Advance Package (seats six). The Tech Package includes perforated leather-trimmed interior, heated front seats, a 10-way driver’s seat with Power Lumbar Support and Easy Entry, 8-way passenger’s seat, and a memory system for the driver’s seat, steering column, mirrors, audio, and climate controls. It also includes second-row seating for three passengers, a One-Touch Smart Slide Walk-in third row.

The Advance Package includes perforated Milano premium leather seating with contrast stitching, passenger-side lumbar support, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, second-row captain’s chairs, heated second-row outboard seats, and rear sunshades.

Both trims include GPS-linked three-zone climate control, a Smart Entry System, push-button start, a leather-wrapped tilting/telescoping steering wheel, Ambient Cabin Lighting, and Hidden Cargo Storage with Smart Lid.

Safety Ratings and Technology

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2018 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid a 2018 Top Safety Pick, getting top scores in all crashworthiness tests. Plus, it’s standard crash avoidance and mitigation system was rated Superior. Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2018 MDX a 5-Star Overall Rating. ‡

The MDX Sport Hybrid comes equipped standard with a Multi-View Rear Camera with Dynamic Gridlines, a Blind Spot Information System, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Road Departure Mitigation, LED daytime running lights, Lane Keeping Assist, and Collision Mitigation Braking. The Advance Package adds a CMBS Heads-Up Warning, Surround-View Camera, and front and rear parking sensors.
